Volunteer Information
American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State Staff/Counselors are volunteers. We are always looking to add more individuals to this dedicated group. If you are an ALA member or former Girls State citizen and are interested in joining us, please fill out this google form (check back later, link will be active after October 31st).
Please note: It is necessary to conduct criminal background checks on all staff.
City: City Counselors volunteer for this busy and physically demanding week of challenges and personal rewards. City Assistant Counselors and City Counselors work as a team to help supervise and work with a group of up to 56 citizens to ensure that they are working through the various requirements of the program. Need to be versed on government and politics. Supervise the establishment of the city government and are responsible for the proper conduct of their citizens while at ALABGS. Responsible for their cities at all times and must frequently take roll call. There are 14 cities at ALABGS and each citizen is assigned to a city. Each city is assigned a specific number of conference rooms, and the citizens become very close in friendship, spirit, and activities. Each city attends the assemblies and forms the city government and structure in order to function at ALABGS. The city counselor advises and supervises these activities. At night, she takes “bed check” and is the closest staff member to her citizens. Responsible for guiding an Assistant City Counselor.
Skills: Knowledge of Wisconsin government; Teaching Wisconsin government; Patience, respect and encouragement.
Activity Level: High - will be with delegates most of the time, walking across campus at their speed, very few breaks

Assistant City: Assistant City Counselors are selected for their interest, enthusiasm and leadership abilities. Volunteers their time during the busy, fun and exciting week. City and Assistant City Counselors work as a team to help supervise and work with a group of up to 56 citizens to ensure that they are working through the various requirements of the program.
Activity Level: High - will be with delegates most of the time, walking across campus at their speed, very few breaks.
County: County Counselors volunteer for this busy and physically demanding week of challenges and personal rewards. County counselors work as a team with City and assistant counselors from both cities in their county to help supervise and work with a group of up to 120 citizens to ensure that they are working through the various requirements of the program. Need to be versed on government and politics. Supervise the establishment of the county government and are responsible for the proper conduct of their citizens while at ALABGS. Responsible for their counties at all times and must frequently take roll call. There are 7 counties at ALABGS, and each citizen is assigned to a county based on which city they live in. Each county is assigned a specific number of conference rooms, and the citizens become very close in friendship, spirit, and activities. Each county attends the assemblies and forms the county government and structure in order to function at ALABGS. The county counselor advises and supervises these activities. Responsible for guiding an Assistant County Counselor.

Party: Each citizen is assigned a political party upon arrival – the Nationalist or the Federalist. These political parties serve as the basis and structure of bipartisan politics including developing a platform, campaigning, elections, and appointments at city, county and state levels. The parties provide a spirited opportunity to cheer and motivate fellow citizens as “they throw their hats into the political ring.” Must be comfortable speaking in front of around 350 citizens, and should know the basics of parliamentary procedure.
Activity Level: Moderate - will walk across campus a few times a day, not always with delegates.
Assistant Party: Will assist the Party Counselor on stage during party meetings, and is in charge of the laptop and helping edit Party Platforms as they amend things. Knowledge of Microsoft Word is needed. Will be in charge of helping the delegates run the Party Rally on Tuesday afternoon.
Activity Level: Moderate - will walk across campus a few times a day, not always with delegates.
Badger Tales (Newspaper): Designing the daily newspaper layout
Skills: Ability to edit articles; Ability to work individually or with a team; Has excellent oral and written communication skills with a good command of English grammar; Knowledge of MS Publisher and MS Word.
Activity Level: Low - will stay in Gruenhagen Conference Center most of the time.
Band: Citizens who love to play a musical instrument can join the ALA Badger Girls State band and practice on free time. The band plays at most assemblies, providing a peppy atmosphere that gets the spirit going.
Activity Level: Moderate - will walk across campus a few times a day, not always with delegates.
Chorus: Citizens who love to sing can join the ALA Badger Girls State chorus and practice on free time. The chorus performs at the Inauguration Ceremony.
Activity Level: Moderate - will walk across campus a few times a day, not always with delegates.
Senate/Assembly: Counselors guide citizens in the law-making process. Girls elected to the ALA Badger Girls State legislature organize their house by electing leaders. A bill writing session follows and those bills are introduced in a following session. ALABGS Legislators chair public hearings and just prior to the close of the week, their bills are debated. This is the most active part of the ALA Badger Girls State government

Activity Level: Low - will remain in Gruenhagen Conference Center most of the week, will walk across campus for Public Hearings and Legislative Sessions.
Senate/Assembly Assistant: Will assist the Legislative counselors in distribution of materials prior to organizing session (requires light lifting), overseeing the bill writing session to answer questions and lend support as needed, and the bundling of bills once they are printed. Responsible for posting announcements regarding Public Hearings throughout Gruenhagen Conference Center (ALABGS lodging floors only).
Activity Level: Moderate - will be running errands/messages within GCC during setup and between sessions. Some light lifting required. Will remain in GCC most of the time.
Elections: Completes ballots for elections. Must have some computer knowledge, or willing to learn about Google forms and spreadsheets.
Activity Level: Low- Will stay in Gruenhagen Conference Center most of the time.
Nurse:

Current medical license in the State of WI required.

Assigned to serve on staff throughout the entire week. Available 24/7 to citizens and staff.

Sets up medical center.

Reviews medical forms for completeness and to identify special needs of citizens. Administers over-the-counter medications if the citizen’s physician signed the health form as indicated.

Logs citizen complaints, interventions, and outcomes. Provide basic on-site medical care to ALABGS citizens, such as physical assessment. Evaluates and manages medical emergencies - (communicates with family in case of emergency).

If warranted, arranges a citizen to be seen by a doctor and contacts parents immediately if this occurs.

Must have own vehicle to transport girls or staff if needed and to visit the local pharmacy.

Triages and transports to urgent care if needed.

Some heavy lifting required.

Conducts final inventory and packs medical center at completion of session.

Activity Level: Moderate to High, depending need.
Technology: Runs registration system. Must have computer knowledge of all things Google- Forms, Excel, etc. Run name tags, door plates, and rosters for the week. Creates and prints all certificates, and keeps track of when citizens leave and are replaced.
Activity Level: Low - will be in Gruenhagen Conference Center most of the week.
Multi-Media: Take pictures of events throughout week. Upload to computer. Assist in developing yearbook. Perform regular updates to ALABGS blog and website. Email updates to parents and families throughout week. Create slide show. Knowledge of PowerPoint and/or other image editing programs. May also be asked to drive the golf cart as needed
Activity Level: Moderate - will walk across campus a few times a day, not with delegates.
Office Secretary: Sets up and runs ALABGS office. Computer skills, knowledge of PowerPoint, and word processing required. Assists with apparel sales and inventory. Prepares bank deposits daily. Packs and inventories office at end of session. Assists Chairman with other duties as needed.
Activity Level: Low- will stay in Gruenhagen Conference Center most of the day.
Store: Sets up ALABGS store with apparel and merchandise. Opens store to citizens for memorabilia purchases. Moves boxes of merchandise, conducts inventory.
Activity Level: Low- will stay in Gruenhagen Conference Center most of the time.
Overnight Staff: Would need to be in Gruenhagen, from 7pm until 7am the next day (yes, you can sleep.) You may be asked to help out with light office work, but you will be there to help on the floor at night.
