ALA BGS Executive Director Welcome

Joanie Dickerson, American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State Executive Director

Jun 21, 2026

Welcome to American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State!

This week will be an adventure which you will never be able to repeat.

Our daily lives hold numerous things for which we should be thankful. One of the countless gifts is our Democratic way of life which offers individual rights, the privilege of voting and the four freedoms.

Today’s world requires knowledge plus understanding to appreciate the true value of citizenship and how the lives of each individual is affected by the services provided by the government.

We want your experience at ALA BGS to give you added skills and enthusiasm for the future. It is our goal to give you direction so that you gain practical knowledge of the functioning of government as preparation for your becoming future voters. Your week here will also serve as a training session for the day when you become adults in the complex society of ours; when you take your place in your chosen profession.

As one of the luckiest and most privileged high school girls in the State of Wisconsin, for one week you will be full-fledged citizens carrying out all the responsibilities of a State entirely yours. The success or failure of making this a worthwhile week depends upon your participation as a “Good Citizen” of Badger Girls State.

I encourage you to participate in all phases of the program as it unfolds each day. Try to absorb it all, not just let it trickle over you.

On behalf of the entire staff, we are here to support you in making the 81st Session of American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State the BEST one yet! May you enjoy your time with us at UW-Oshkosh, make new friends, and return home with many wonderful memories of your ALA BGS experience.
